DESIGN PRACTICE

Design is something I reflect upon regularly as something that changed my thinking and approach and I am excited to let it infiltrate my teaching practice. My undergraduate showed me that design is a fundamental pursuit that can enhance how we approach problems and negotiate our life. I am very passionate about involving design in the art room and used this as the focus of my research report.

TL;DR

Editorial Design

The rate at which language is evolving in today’s world seems exponential. Much of this can be attributed to media and technology. Many would consider today’s verbal and written language as a degradation of what it used to be. However, much of this communication in text speech and abbreviation can also be seen as a more expressive and precise version of written language. What issues does this raise for our culture and what does is say about where society is headed? TL;DR is a design publication that focuses on making relevant arguments around controversial issues in contemporary culture. This issue is a photographic response to the current arguments on modern communication, specifically focusing on text speak and communication within technology.

The author, Richard Buckminster Fuller, was seen as an innovator of his time and pointed out in this text many of our simple flaws as humans. He talks about natural teamwork being a clear solution to the problem. This design focuses on the theme of teamwork and evidence of it in nature. The issues we face can be solved by coming together.

ST. MEL'S

St. Mel’s branding was based on the Irish myths originating in Brí Leith in Longford Town. Each beer is based on one of the tales of Midhir, a mythological Fairy King. The patterning is designed with elements of each story and gives the beer a traditional and luxurious appeal. The School Of Applied Makeup were looking for a branding update that would appeal to a young local audience. The owner had a medical background and had began the business with other offerings such as nails and beauty treatments.
